Assessment of ADHD

In order to confirm your symptoms and to diagnose ADHD, physicians and psychiatrists are increasingly requiring formal neuropsychological assessment (aka ‘testing’).  The outcome of the assessment process (given relevant, genuine symptoms) is a valid diagnosis of ADHD according to criteria specified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).  If you are given such a diagnosis, your academic and social functioning may benefit from counseling and medication, as well as accommodations through the Americans with Disability Act (ADA).

WHAT’S THE TURN AROUND TIME?

Expect at least a 1-3 month to get an appointment. It can be at least 1 month after that appointment to get results from your evaluation.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Typical cost of assessment is around $500.00.  UMSL and Compass Health offer a sliding-fee-scale based on income (if you are dependent on your parent(s)’ taxes, the fee will be based on their income) and do not take insurance.  Thompson Center takes insurance and offers a structured cash payment plan, but no fee scale.

WHAT HAPPENS?

Expect an intake (either by phone or written form), followed by a series of face to face sessions (zoom or in-person)  You will undergo a clinical interview, followed by a battery of tests.  Some tests are self-report (i.e.,  you complete them on your own like a course exam) with others administered to you (e.g., complete tasks while being observed, make verbal responses to prompts).  You may also be asked to provide educational or other records extending back to childhood.  The second, follow-up session consists of reviewing the evaluation report and attending to any of your questions.

WHAT DO I DO WITH MY REPORT?

If you are given a diagnosis of ADHD, you may benefit from medication, academic accommodations, and counseling.  You can present your report to:

  1. An SHS physician consultation or "hometown" physician/psychiatrist for possible medication.
  2. The Accommodation Advisors with the Student Accessibility & Testing team, will review your report and work with the director to determine any reasonable academic accommodations. You can contact them by phone at 573-341-6655, by email dss@mst.edu or stopping by their office located in G-10 Norwood Hall.
  3. Student Well-Being (204 Norwood Hall; 573-341-4211; wellbeing.mst.edu) currently offers a support group for students diagnosed with AD/HD.
