Head Athletic Trainer
Austin Matlock joined the sports medicine team at Missouri S&T in 2017 as the Head Athletic Trainer. Matlock is originally from Springfield, MO and received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Southwest Baptist University. He would go on to receive his Master’s degree in education theory from the University of Central Missouri.
After graduating, Matlock worked for Lincoln University as the Assistant Athletic Trainer and was responsible for all 14 sports for the DII athletics program. After three years, he assumed the role as Head Athletic Trainer in spring of 2014. During his time there, he specialized in insurance coordination and budgeting, which led to the increase of 2 positions. He also taught classes during his time at Lincoln and is certified through the American Red Cross as an instructor. Matlock also served as the medical coordinator for the NCAA DII Regional Golf Tournament and the NJCAA Regional Basketball Tournament.
Will Baum, M.AT, ATC, LAT, PES, CES
Head Football Athletic Trainer
Will Baum joined the Miners Sports Medicine Staff as an assistant athletic trainer in the Spring of 2015, and was given the title of Head Football Athletic Trainer in 2018. He is responsible for the healthcare of the Football program, Men’s/Women’s golf teams, and oversees the student paraprofessional program for the sports medicine staff. From 2012-2015 he worked with Missouri State University as an Intern Athletic Trainer with the Football Program, Men’s/Women’s Golf teams, and worked as a Team Leader for the Gatorade Summer Sports Camps. Will received his Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Arkansas in 2012, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Baker University in 2010.
Will, a native of St. Louis, is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) & Licensed by Missouri Board of Healing Arts. He is also certified by National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) and Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES).
Tom Pomerleau ATC, LAT, CSCS
Tom Pomerleau joined the sports medicine team at Missouri S&T in 2013 and works with the football, softball and swimming teams. Pomerleau is originally from Waukesha, Wis., and received his undergraduate education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where he graduated with a major in Athletic Training and a minor in strength and conditioning.
After graduating, Pomerleau worked for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas as an intern athletic trainer. He was primarily responsible for working with the athletes of the football and tennis teams. Pomerleau also worked several week-long sporting events including: Eurobasket summer league, several adidas AAU basketball summer leagues, stretcher crew at the Gold Cup final in Los Angeles, and was a private physio to a professional tennis player at Indian Wells Tennis Club.
Kaleena Baum, MS, ATC, LAT
Kaleena joined the sports medicine team at Missouri S&T in November 2015. She is currently responsible for the coverage of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams, but has previously worked with the women's basketball, women's volleyball and women's soccer teams.
Kaleena is originally from Springfield, MO, where she attended Missouri State University and received her Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2013. Upon graduation, she received a graduate assistantship at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where she worked with the women’s soccer and the men’s and women’s track & field teams during the 2013-2014 season. From 2014-2015 she worked for The Therapy Center in Jennings, LA, where she spent time working in the therapy clinic as well as covering three high schools. She completed her Master’s degree in Health Sciences with a Sports Medicine concentration in April 2015.
Intern Athletic Trainer
Sam joined the Sports Medicine team at S&T in August 2018 and is from Wildwood, MO. She attended Bradley University to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences. She then moved to Utah to get her Master’s degree in Athletic Training from Weber State University. She had the pleasure of working with the Utah Royals FC team over the summer of 2018 and worked with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the summer of 2017. Samantha played Club Soccer at Bradley University and she enjoys traveling, hiking, kayaking and biking.
Intern Athletic Trainer
Rafika joined the Sports Medicine team at S&T in August 2018. She is originally from Bolingbrook, Illinois where she attended Northern Illinois University and received her Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training in May of 2018. Prior to Graduation she completed an academic internship with the Arizona State University sports medicine department working with their football program. During her academic career Rafika was an active member of the Northern Illinois Athletic Training Student Association (NIATSA). She also played rugby for the Northern Illinois University Women's Rugby Team and the Chicago Griffins Summer 7's Team.
